Canada lures U.S. Immigrants

This surge in interest could have several implications for the U.S. in terms of competing in the global economy and addressing its population and economic challenges. 

“The popularity of a new Canadian program meant to attract American tech workers north of the border should serve as a warning to U.S. immigration officials and lawmakers, American immigration lawyers say,” CBC News reports. 

At the start of July, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada opened up an application portal for immigrants in the United States who hold H1-B visas that allow them to work in the tech industry. The portal was designed to draw these visa holders to Canada on three-year open work permits, and it worked so well that the program reached its 10,000-applicant cap in two days. 

A U.S. H1-B visa holder who loses their job must leave the country in 60 days, unless they find new employment within that time period. According to USCIS numbers, close to 600,000 immigrants hold H1-B visas. 

Competing in the global economy 

The high number of applicants seeking immigration to Canada suggests that there might be concerns among U.S. immigrants about economic opportunities. To remain competitive in the global economy, the U.S. must consider factors that are attracting its population to other countries and work on addressing those issues, such as job creation, workforce development, and economic policies that promote growth and innovation. 

"At the very least, Canadians have brought to light the fact that there are other, smarter countries with better immigration policies that actually value science, technology, engineering and math," said immigration lawyer Ashwin Sharma of the Sharma Law Office in Jacksonville, Fla., to CBC News.
